TRAD Group Announces Partnership with CADS

Following the launch of its innovative Plettac Metrix scaffold system, TRAD Hire & Sales Ltd has announced its partnership with CADS – the UK’s market leader in structural design and estimating software for the construction industry.

As part of the new partnership, TRAD will be implementing CADS SMART Scaffolder software across its nationwide network of hire and sales depots. CADS is also developing a Plettac Metrix module for use by existing SMART Scaffolder users in the industry.

John Paterson, Managing Director of TRAD Hire & Sales, spoke recently about this exciting new development.

“As part of the launch of Plettac Metrix, we recognised the importance of providing first class support alongside a first class scaffolding system, so we’ve partnered with the UK’s market leader for scaffolding design and estimating software. With system scaffolding the thinking needs to be done before the equipment is delivered to site. SMART Scaffolder is an incredibly powerful tool which now enables our depots to effectively build the scaffold first in a 3D environment, then with the click of a button we can produce material lists, drawings, 3D views and quotes. This not only dramatically speeds up our response times but also improves accuracy. Modelling the scaffold first also allows us to identify and overcome any potential issues before anything is delivered to site.

We’re also working with CADS to develop a Metrix module for SMART Scaffolder. This means that very soon, existing SMART Scaffolder users will be able to contact CADS and purchase the Metrix module as a bolt on to their existing package, giving users access to a full suite of Metrix components.”

CISRS have today unveiled a range of new logos to help modernise their branding and have announced a planned re-design of the CISRS website.

cisrs new logos

The new logos have been reportedly designed in-house that incorporates the company’s colours orange, black and white.

The range of logos includes:

* Orange logo with black company name,
* Orange logo with white company name, and
* Black logo with orange company name.

The new logos will be forwarded to CISRS training providers initially and then rolled out throughout the rest of the year, with a view to complete integration in early 2016.

CISRS Scheme Manager Dave Mosley said: “We have had the old silver and white CISRS logo for many years now and felt the time had come to modernise and bring it into line with the orange, black and white designs of our advertising campaigns. The rotation of the colours will provide a “home and away strip” scenario and will be helpful particularly if the training providers wish to use the new logo alongside their own corporate colours or branding.

“We are aware the integration of a new logo can take time to achieve, but hope that by the early part of 2016, everyone will be using the new designs, and that they will be well-received by the scaffolding, training and wider construction industries. The CISRS website, which will also be receiving a re-vamp, will include the new logos.”

The CITB announced yesterday that £500,000 of new funding is available to train scaffolders in the North East of Scotland.

In a press release the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) announced that the money is being made available due to increasing demand for scaffolders and a lack of training in the region.

At present, would-be scaffolders travel to Inchinnan, Renfrewshire, for CITB training – but now top quality courses will be brought to where they are needed most.

CITB is encouraging training providers to bid for the funding, with the new facility scheduled to open in September 2016.

Alex Birks, CITB’s Head of Strategic Training Provision, said: “There is growing demand for scaffolding courses in the North East of Scotland, which is why we are pleased to fund a new training facility in the region.

“The centre will provide young people with superb opportunities to learn new skills and start rewarding, fulfilling careers in construction.

The successful bidder will work with CITB and their partners to provide high quality training and help meet the skills needs of the construction sector in the North of Scotland.”

Chigwell Construction has purchased Craft Scaffolding Ltd after the firm became frustrated with constantly being let down by subcontractors.

The Essex based construction company’s latest acquisition will see Craft Scaffolding rebranded as Chigwell Craft Scaffolding Ltd.

Chigwell set up a roofing division last year which now has in excess of twenty directly employed roofers.

Speaking to the Construction Enquirer, Managing director Dean Floyd said: “We were being let down when using subcontractors for scaffolding mainly because the industry is so busy. “It seemed the obvious solution to bring scaffolding in-house via this acquisition.”

Craft Scaffolding has been a member of the Chigwell supply chain for many years and director Andrew Hollands retains a 50% shareholding.

Craft has an annual turnover of £2.9m which is forecast to rise to £5m within the next 12 months.

The deal takes Chigwell Group’s annual turnover to just under £50m.

SHS appoints Michael Griffiths as Regional Director to its Doncaster Office.

SHS Integrated Services, a specialist provider of high-specification industrial scaffolding to highly regulated environments, has appointed a new regional director to its Doncaster office in a bid to boost its presence in the north east.

Michael Griffiths, 34, from Rotherham has been a prominent figure in the power and transmission sector for over eight years and will now be responsible for strengthening SHS’s relationships with existing clients and driving new business leads in the industrial, construction, civil and rail sectors across the north.

Prior to joining SHS, Mr Griffiths spent seven years working at Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions, starting as a draughtsman and progressing to become a team leader, where he was responsible for the design, feasibility and planning of contracts ranging from £10,000 to £2.5 million.

Mr Griffiths joined SHS in 2013 as part of the acquisition of Dixon Pentland Scaffolding, where he had worked since 2007, and has spent the 18 months working as a commercial manager with SHS, before being promoted into this newly created position.

Commenting on his appointment, Mr Griffiths said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to lead SHS’s UK transmission & distribution division and develop the company’s presence in north east England. We have ambitious growth plans for SHS in the north east and hope to double the current turnover within the next three years while ensuring the business model remains both sustainable and diverse.

“Building on our strong presence in the area, we will be providing a wider range of services to our customers, while driving growth and increasing operations. “With a team of highly-skilled, experienced and motivated staff at the core of the company’s operations, I have no doubt that SHS’s presence in the north east will develop as we continue delivering innovative and cost effective solutions while maintaining our high safety and quality standards.

“All the stepping stones are in place to ensure the business achieves its ambitious growth plans and I am excited to be a part of this highly focussed and driven company going forward.”

SHS has witnessed a number of high-profile contract wins in recent years and has successfully developed the transmission division, providing solutions to clients such as Balfour Beatty, Amec Foster Wheeler and Babcock International. In addition to the company’s recent expansion, SHS has diversified its market sector presence, incorporating the specialist power and transmission firm it acquired in 2013 into the business’ long term growth plans.

SHS currently provides services principally to the utility, petrochemical, transmission and construction sectors but hopes to widen its operations into nuclear, rail, marine and pharmaceutical sectors as part of its growth strategy.

Gavin Payne, chief executive officer of SHS, said: “Appointing Michael to the position of regional director is an important part of our long term strategy and strengthens our existing management team in the north east.

“Michael is an exceptionally dedicated and technically gifted person and will bring invaluable skills to the company. I am certain that his extensive experience and industry knowledge will have a big impact in delivering growth while nurturing existing client relationships in the region.

Michael’s experience in a large contractor environment and knowledge of the transmission sector is invaluable to the wide range of complex projects SHS undertakes and will be of huge benefit in helping to meet our ambitious growth strategy in 2016 and beyond.

“The company has gone from strength-to-strength in recent years and, as we continue to deliver exceptional quality to our customers, we are committed to holding a strong, competitive position in the market.

“The company’s recent success is a reflection of our highly skilled workforce and exhibits our commitment to exceptional health and safety and focus on providing an efficient, sustainable, high quality and cost effective service.”

Established in 1998, SHS Integrated Services offers scaffold access, industrial and HVAC insulation, and construction and demolition services. It currently employs more than 300 people across the UK.

West Worcestershire MP Harriett Baldwin has urged youngsters to climb the ladder to success in the scaffolding industry.

As part of a national campaign to get more construction companies to take on apprentices, Mrs Baldwin met up with Jon Stone from Malvern Scaffolding to talk about the challenges this presents.

Speaking to the Ledbury Reporter she said: “Malvern Scaffolding is a well-known local company with contracts all over the county and in Birmingham and recruits some of its staff through apprenticeships. As more and more construction projects get underway across the region, the company is eager to recruit and train more young people.

“Scaffolders are in high demand and can command great salaries so it’s a high-flying and demanding job and these skills are very valuable. Vacancies are at an all-time high and there are plenty of opportunities for people who want more vocationally-based education. I have offered Jon my help to try and make sure that we spread the word that the sky’s the limit when it comes to a job in scaffolding.”

Layher has unveiled a new aluminium Universal Modular Beam and announced the opening of a new depot in Birmingham.

The new heavy duty beam has been designed for the UK market and connects directly to Layher’s Allround system and traditional tube and fitting scaffolds. It has a 1.25 m depth and 60 mm top and bottom chords, and will be available in a range of lengths.

The all-aluminium structure features rosette connectors on the vertical posts’ centre points, allowing it to be lined up and applied to system scaffolding.

The new Universal Modular Beam will be available during the fourth quarter of this year.

At the open day Sean Pike, Layher UK managing director added: the beam is lightweight and easily transportable, and has been in the planning stages for two to three years following requests from UK customers.

He explained the product is also designed for use in the events sector and thanks to a range of adapter pieces can easily be constructed into mezzanine flooring and dance floors, for example.

The Universal Modular Beam can also be used to construct dome structures of 35 m and above, thanks to a range of ridge beam connections.

Mr Pike also used the open day to announce the opening of a new UK depot in Birmingham next year.

The new Midlands depot will supplement the head office in Letchworth and the regional facilities in Scotland and North Yorkshire – it launched its most recent depot in Eggborough last year.

The plan is to be closer to UK customers, allowing them easy access to the six months’ worth of stock held in the UK.

BM TRADA Scaffold Board Scheme promotes construction site safety

$
0
0

Scaffold boards are used in their thousands on construction sites across the UK, enabling workers to operate safely at height. However, BM TRADA, part of the Exova Group, warns recent incidents have highlighted that the failure of a timber scaffold board can result in serious injury or even death and leave contractors facing prosecution and significant fines.

With failures often the result of used scaffold boards being inadequately checked after DSCN2110having been stored or used inappropriately, BM TRADA has launched its Q Mark Used Timber Scaffold Board Inspection Scheme, to enable certified companies to demonstrate that their inspectors are competent to determine if boards should remain in use.

While there is no legislative requirement for used timber scaffold boards to be regularly inspected, to ensure safety on site, scaffold boards should be checked and assessed on a regular basis when in use and each time they are re-issued or supplied  to site. It is also important that boards which have been checked are stored separately to those that have not.

With major contractors recognising the dangers, they are starting to ask how scaffold board issuing companies can demonstrate the competency of those inspecting boards. The BM TRADA Q-Mark Used Timber Scaffold Board Inspection Scheme provides a means of verifying that inspectors are suitably qualified.

While most scaffolding companies will ensure their employees complete a scaffolders’ training course, the BM TRADA Scheme provides added confidence to contractors, since the competence of board inspectors is regularly checked by an independent third party body.  This enables contractors to specify their hire with confidence and demonstrate due diligence if required.

To achieve certification under the scheme, the scaffolding company must nominate individual employees who will be covered.  Each is required to demonstrate their competence to identify damage which is likely to reduce the strength of used timber scaffold boards. Every nominated inspector is required to complete scheme-specific training, pass an examination and complete a competence assessment at the company’s premises.

BM TRADA will also undertake an initial audit of the company to ensure that a documented inspection process is in place. This process must demonstrate that only approved inspectors carry out inspections, only approved boards are released for use and all rejected boards are segregated.

Companies who meet the scheme’s requirements will be issued with a certificate and certification marks to enable them to demonstrate and promote their certification. Certification is valid for two years and following this is maintained through a programme of annual surveillance audits, with a recertification audit required in the second year before the certification expires.

In addition to offering confidence to contractors, the scheme enables certified companies to demonstrate their competence and highlight their commitment to quality. This offers them a competitive advantage when tendering and can increase repeat business as contractors increasingly recognise the benefit of specifying used timber scaffold boards which are regularly inspected by third party certified competent inspectors.

For further information on the BM TRADA Q-Mark Used Timber Scaffold Board Inspection Scheme, visit www.bmtrada.com, email: sbeer@bmtrada.com; or call: 01494 569821.

XERVON Palmers bags scaffolding contract at the £155M Green Man Lane regeneration project in Ealing, London.

The well-known scaffolding and industrial services contractor has been appointed by successful southern-UK-based construction, development, maintenance and management group Rydon.

XERVON Palmers operatives will be providing access solutions on Phase two of works commencing this Autumn – crucially utilising specialist Layher Scaffold system – facilitating the construction of 187 new homes within apartment blocks which are due for completion in early 2017.

For the scaffolding and access, Palmers will be utilising circa 400 tons of the Layher all round system scaffolding to provide access to Blocks A, B G & H of the Green Man Lane regeneration. And there will be a typically eclectic picture of scaffold provided, including façade, birdcage, stairways, loading bays and cantilevered access.

The four phase Green Man Lane project for Clients London Borough of Ealing is being delivered in a 50:50 joint venture partnership with A2Dominion and Rydon – aiming to regenerate the Green Man Lane estate in the West London borough. The project value is £155M and is expected to take nine years. The existing 464 flat local authority housing estate is being demolished – paving the way for 770 new homes (300 for open market sale and 400 for affordable rent and shared ownership homes for A2Dominion).

Ian McFarlane, Director for Business & Project Development at XERVON Palmers said: “We are thrilled to be working with Rydon on the superb Green Man regeneration project – regenerating an important part of the capital. The contract confirms Palmers strategy to make a difference by offering our customers an alternative to traditional tube and fittings within the UK Market, with our system scaffold solutions. And one of the key factors in securing this contract was our ability to provide Layher scaffolding to the developer, as we also did recently at Aberthaw Power Station.”

And Donald Morrison, CEO of XERVON Palmers added: “Congratulations to our regional team for securing this contract, which is our first major success with Rydon. We are very much looking forward to doing a great scaffold and access job, which will hopefully pave the way for a long-term future of quality work with the construction group in London and the South.”
